Undersheriff Gary Elliott began his career with the Sheriff’s Office as a correctional officer in 1989. He has worked at all current and former jail facilities including the Sentenced Detention Facility on Claybank Road, the Justice Center Detention Facility on Union Avenue, the old Branch County Jail in Vallejo, and the former Fairfield County Jail on Texas Street.
In July 1991, Elliott was promoted to deputy sheriff and attended the Napa Valley Police Academy, Class #19. Upon graduation, he was assigned to the Sheriff’s Public Safety Division where he held assignments in patrol and court security. In January 1999, he was assigned to the investigations bureau as a detective where he remained until he was promoted to sergeant in August of 2001. As a deputy sheriff, Elliott served as a Field Training Officer, a charter member of the Defensive Tactics Team and a member of the department’s Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team. As a sergeant, he served in the patrol bureau, the Vallejo court security office, the investigations bureau, the Office of Emergency Services (OES), and as the departments’ SWAT Team Leader.
In January of 2006, Elliott was promoted to lieutenant. In this capacity he served as the patrol services commander, watch commander, and investigative services commander. He also served as the commander of the Sheriff’s Emergency Response Team (SERT). SERT consists of the SWAT Team, the Mobile Field Force, the Hostage Negotiations Team, and the Tactical Dispatch Team. In November 2010, he was promoted to captain and named the Custody Division Commander, where he served as the Sheriff’s principle advisor on the subject of Criminal Justice Realignment. On November 11th, 2012, Sheriff Thomas A. Ferrara promoted Elliott to Undersheriff.
Undersheriff Elliott has an Associate’s Degree in Business Management from Solano Community College, a Bachelor’s Degree in Management from Upper Iowa University, and a Master’s Degree in the Administration of Justice and Security from the University of Phoenix. He is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy, 235th Session.
In addition to his duties at the Sheriff’s Office, Elliott is a commissioned officer in the United States Army Reserve where he holds the rank of Colonel. He is a veteran of Operations Iraqi Freedom, and Noble Eagle. Colonel Elliott’s military awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Iraqi Campaign Medal.
Undersheriff Elliott and his wife, Lisa, live in Vacaville. They have four adult children, and five grandchildren.
