Solano County Public Health reports first pediatric death related to COVID-19 in Solano County

SOLANO COUNTY –– The Solano County Department of Health and Social Services, Public Health division, has confirmed the first pediatric death related to COVID-19 in Solano County. The child was under the age of 1. 

“We offer our deepest condolences to this child’s loved ones during their time of grief,” said Bela T. Matyas, M.D., M.P.H., Solano County Health Officer “This loss is an urgent reminder that children can get seriously ill and die from COVID-19. While pediatric deaths are incredibly rare, they are also very tragic.” 

As of Monday morning, December 20, 2021, there are 369 active cases in Solano County, and 342 cumulative deaths since the start of the pandemic. Approximately 77 percent of Solano County residents have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. 

“I urge Solano residents to get vaccinated, or boosted, for COVID-19,” Matyas says. “Getting the COVID-19 vaccine is the most effective approach we can take to protect our families and communities, most especially the children who are too young to get vaccinated.”

COVID-19 vaccines significantly reduce the risk of severe symptoms, hospitalizations and deaths, and help reduce the spread of COVID-19. The COVID-19 vaccine and booster shots are available for individuals 5 years and older and are easily accessible at many provider sites throughout Solano County, including pop-up vaccine clinics, pharmacies and hospitals. The mass vaccination clinics at the Solano County Fairgrounds, located at 900 Fairgrounds Drive in Vallejo, will operate until January 29, 2022. Consider using the following safety measures to reduce the spread of COVID-19, including:

n  Get vaccinated for those 5 years and older, or a booster dose for those 16 years old and above
n  Wear a face covering when inside indoor public spaces
n  Avoid large crowds and poorly ventilated areas
n  Stay home when you are feeling sick and wash hands frequently
n  Get tested if you have symptoms, have been exposed to someone with COVID-19
n  Be cautious around immunocompromised individuals, the elderly and young children
