County Board of Supervisors seeks applicants for Commission for Women and Girls

June 18, 2018

SOLANO COUNTY – The Solano County Board of Supervisors is currently accepting applications for appointment to the newly created Solano Commission for Women and Girls, now through July 20, 2018.  Established by the Board on April 24, the Commission aims to improve the economic status, health and social welfare, and overall quality of life for women and girls in Solano County.

The Commission for Women and Girls will consist of 17 members, including 15 adults and two youth members.  Since the Commission is new, the recruitment is for every position at this time.  Applicants will be appointed through the following means, including:

- One Commissioner appointed by each County Supervisorial District (Districts 1 – 5)
- Commissioner appointed by the Solano County Superintendent of Schools
- One Commissioner appointed by the City Council of each of the seven cities in Solano County, including Benicia, Dixon, Fairfield, Rio Vista, Suisun, Vacaville and Vallejo
- The Commission will appoint two youth Commissioners (age 14-24) and two At-Large Commissioners

The purpose of the Commission is to provide community education and advisement to the Solano County Board of Supervisors and other entities in the county on issues relating to the changing social and economic conditions of women and girls.  Commissioners will work together to raise awareness of women's issues, celebrate the achievements of local deserving women, champion opportunities for women and girls and recommend legislative solutions at the city, county, state and federal levels.

The first meeting of the Commission for Women and Girls will be held on September 19, 2018 at 6:00 p.m. at the County Administration Center, located at 675 Texas Street in Fairfield.  Commission members will decide future meeting dates, time and location and approve the by-laws.  As their first order of business, Commissioners will form sub-committees and develop a plan for the creation of a Report on the Status of Women and Girls in Solano County.

Applications for the Commission for Women and Girls is on the Solano County web page at www.SolanoCounty.com/Depts/Bos/Commission_For_Women_And_Girls.asp and by emailing [email protected].  Please note that Commissioners do not receive a stipend; they serve as a volunteer on the Commission.
