County’s sixth corner store to get healthy makeover

June 8, 2017

SOLANO COUNTY – The Solano County Department of Health and Social Services, Public Health Division is proud to announce its sixth healthy store makeover at Bourbon House Beer, Wine and Spirits in Vallejo.  As part of the VibeSolano healthy store makeover initiative, Bourbon House's makeover will include adding more fruits, vegetables and healthy snacks and beverages at the checkout.

"Once I saw the success of the health store makeovers at other stores in Vallejo, Fairfield, Benicia and Dixon, I realized it would be a good opportunity to increase healthy options for our customers," says Ajeet Grewal, Bourbon House manager.  “I am looking forward to working with the community to make sure Bourbon House offers items that residents really want to buy.”

Fighting Back Partnership, a non-profit organization in Vallejo, has been conducting customer surveys at Bourbon House in preparation for the healthy store makeover.  They asked 80 customers about their shopping experience and what healthy options they would enjoy seeing at Bourbon House.

“The support for healthy options is overwhelming,” says Annabelle Prasad, civic engagement coordinator with Fighting Back Partnership.  “With the recent closure of Vallejo’s Raley’s supermarket, now, more than ever, local residents need places that offer fresh produce and healthy grocery items in their neighborhood.”

Heathy store makeover
Bourbon House will be made over on Saturday, June 10 from 7:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

Community celebration event
A community celebration event will take place on Friday, June 16 from 3 – 6 p.m. at Bourbon House Beer, Wine and Spirits, located at 641 Broadway Street in Vallejo.  Everyone is welcome.

“The bottom line is we need a better balance of healthy options for our community,” said Robin Cox, Senior Health Services Manager for Solano County’s Department of Health and Social Services.  “Placing bottled water, fresh fruit, nuts and healthy snacks up front at checkout makes it easier for customers to make the healthier choice.”

The Bourbon House Beer, Wine and Spirits healthy store makeover and community celebration are made possible by a Partnerships to Improve Community Health grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Solano Public Health.

About VibeSolano
VibeSolano is a set of initiatives of the Health Promotion & Community Wellness Bureau of Solano Public Health, which work toward a more vibrant, healthy Solano.  Our goal is to ensure that our spaces and places support conditions in which our residents can be healthy, and to make healthy choices easy choices.  Much of this work is accomplished by improving access to healthy options, and through policies and environmental changes.  We work with many partners and residents, because this work cannot be accomplished by just one organization. Visit www.VibeSolano.com or @VibeSolano on Facebook and Twitter to learn how to help us create a more vibrant, healthy Solano.

In addition to the healthy store makeovers, VibeSolano works to increase availability of water stations with bottle fillers in local parks and schools, increase smoke-free apartments and public spaces, support clinician-community connections so that residents can live healthy, vibrant lives, and works with Solano’s Safe Routes to Schools program.
