Solano County launched a discount card program today (Sept. 25) to help consumers cope with the high price of prescription drugs.
The county is making free prescription drug discount cards available under a program sponsored by the National Association of Counties (NACo) that offers average savings of 20 percent off the retail price of commonly prescribed drugs.
“Solano County is proud to be one of the counties nationwide participating with NACo on this program,” said Supervisor Jim Spering, who was introduced to the program while attending a NACo conference early this year. “When we saw how this program can provide all residents a break on their prescriptions without costing the taxpayers any money, we knew it was a perfect program for Solano County.”
The cards may be used by all county residents, regardless of age, income, or existing health coverage. The cards can be used at participating pharmacies in Solano County as well as at a national network of more than 57,000 participating pharmacies.
Participating pharmacies include Costco, Longs, Raley’s, Rite Aid, Safeway, Sam’s Club, SaveMart, Target, Walgreens, and Walmart. The discount card program is administered by Caremark Rx, Inc.
County officials stress that the NACo Prescription Discount Card offers a significant savings that will greatly benefit the uninsured and underinsured residents of the county. In addition, residents do not have to be Medicare beneficiaries to be eligible for this program.
Cards are available at the various locations across the county, including Health and Social Services buildings, libraries and family resource centers. Residents can call Solano311 to find a location nearest to them.
Once residents have obtained a discount card, they can call toll free 1-877-321-2652 or visit www.caremark.com/naco for assistance with the program.
Using the NACo Prescription Discount Card is easy. Simply present it at a participating pharmacy. There is no enrollment form, no membership fee and no restrictions or limits on frequency of use. Cardholders and their family members may use the card any time their prescriptions are not covered by insurance.
