8 local agencies taking back unwanted prescription drugs

Drop off expired or unused medications at free collection sites on April 26

All local law enforcement agencies, the Travis Air Force Base BX Pharmacy and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration will be providing the public an opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 26.

Residents should take their medications for disposal to the following sites:

  • Benicia Police Department, 200 East L St., Benicia, 746-4268
  • Dixon Police Department, 201 West A St., Dixon, 678-7070
  • Rio Vista Police Department, 50 Poppy House Road, Rio Vista, 374-6366
  • Solano County Sheriff Coroner's Office, 520 Clay St., Fairfield, 784-7500
  • Suisun City Police Department, 701 Civic Center Blvd., 421-7373
  • Travis AFB Base Exchange Pharmacy, 461 Skymaster Blvd., 423-5345
  • Vacaville Police Department, 660 Merchant St., 469-4707
  • Vallejo Police Department, 111 Amador St., Vallejo, 648-4080
Prescription pills, liquids and creams can be dropped for safe disposal.  Participants are asked to remove all personal information. Pills can be brought in zip lock bags. All liquids and creams must be sealed. Needle waste will not be collected, but residents can go to http://Recycle.SolanoCounty.com for drop-off sites.

The service is a free and anonymous – no questions asked.

Since 2007, the program has collected over 4,000 pounds of expired and unused medications.

"These take-back events give the public a safe and convenient alternative that protects our environment", said Narcisa Untal, Integrated Waste Management Planner for Solano County.
