County opens a dedicated Pediatric Clinic in Fairfield

August 22, 2012

A full-size clinic is now dedicated to pint-sized patients, a testament to Solano County's commitment to keep children at the top of its priority list. Solano County and community officials gathered on Wednesday, Aug. 15 for the opening of a dedicated pediatric clinic in Fairfield to serve children of low-income families.

"We are one of only a few Federally Qualified Health Centers and community clinics in the state offering a clinic solely geared toward children," said Patrick Duterte, director of Solano County Health and Social Services.  "We believe this will make visits to the doctor’s office less stressful on the kids than a standard clinic environment and children will be more responsive to treatment."

The clinic at 2101 Courage Drive in Fairfield features nine exam rooms, three treatment rooms, two provider rooms, a behavioral therapy room, a back office area including a nurse’s station and stations for medical assistants, and a front office and reception area.

Appointments at the Pediatric Clinic are available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The registration counter closed from noon to 12:30 p.m. Walk-in appointments are available on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for primary and urgent care treatment.

The Pediatric Clinic offers integrated care, allowing patients to have access to primary health care as well as behavioral health services, such as mental health and substance abuse. In addition, the clinic is collocated with other key services to improving the lives of children in low-income families, including nutritional services, dental care, child welfare, employment services, health insurance and other eligibility services such as CalFresh.

“Children and their families can use this clinic and the surrounding campus as a one-stop shop opportunity to get all the services they need,” Duterte said.

The clinic also represents a partnership with Touro University that is infusing academic activities into patient care and expanding the capabilities of the clinic.

“Solano County is on the forefront of the national initiative to create Medical Teaching Centers within Federally Qualified Health Centers,” Duterte said.

The renovation of the former primary care clinic to be more children and family friendly was orchestrated by the Architectural Services Division of Solano County’s Department of General Services in partnership with the Facilities Operations Division, Department of Information Technology and Health and Social Services.  The improvements were more than aesthetic.  The technology in the background modernized the clinic for the information age.  The upgraded telephone/data voice over internet protocol system and the installation of wall-mounted computers in exam and treatment rooms were all part the County’s transition to electronic patient records.

Construction was completed as part of the County’s Job Order Contracting (JOC) program by Fregoso Builders, Inc.
