District 1 celebrates three-years of “Friday Morning Walks with the Supervisor”

September 18, 2018

SOLANO COUNTY – Solano County District One Supervisor Erin Hannigan, her District Representatives Michael Wilson and Josette Lacey and Vallejo Mayor Bob Sampayan invite everyone to join them this Friday, September 21 starting at 9 a.m. on the Vallejo waterfront (outside the ferry building) to celebrate three successful years of "Friday Morning Walks with the Supervisor."

Team Hannigan, which meets almost every Friday, encourages people of all ages and walking abilities to exercise on a regular basis.  Over the past three years, more than 200 people have participated in the weekly walks, sharing their thoughts and concerns about the community, creating friendships and encouraging one another to get and remain healthy.

As part of the weekly walks, the Supervisor and her team heard from participants, specifically the senior population, that their shoes did not fit or offer the comfort and support necessary to stay active.  In response, Supervisor Hannigan secured a $30,000 grant from Sutter Health to purchase high-quality walking shoes.  In coordination with Big 5 Sporting Goods and the Florence Douglas Senior Center, Team Hannigan successfully distributed more than 1,100 walking shoes to seniors in Vallejo.

“My doctor told me that I need to walk, and Erin (Hannigan) helped provide the shoes,” said Robin Leong, a weekly walker and Vallejo resident.  “Now I have no excuse not to walk – and because of the weekly walks with the Supervisor, my skills of identifying various species of birds has vastly improved.”

Medical research shows that 30 minutes of exercise a day, including walking, has a positive long-term impact on our health.  Everyone is encouraged to get their walk on by joining Team Hannigan every Friday at the Vallejo waterfront.
