| | | Barbara Kondylis - Supervisor District 1 Personal Barbara Kondylis has been married to Gabriel for 40 years and has a daughter, Nathalie, and a son Alex. Barbara is the grandmother to Katherine and Andrew. Barbara was born July 8, 1943, and has lived in the City of Vallejo since 1969.
Education Barbara holds a Bachelor's Degree in Public Administration received from the University of San Francisco, and a Master's Degree in Public Administration received from California State University at Hayward.
Why she decided to run for County Supervisor In 1971 she and her husband purchased their first home in Vallejo. The house was in a then run down neighborhood; however, it had a beautiful view of an underdeveloped five-acre parcel on the waterfront. She and her husband were assured by a city official that the parcel would become a park. A week after they moved into their new home, she and her husband read that a 180 unit apartment building would be built on the parcel. Barbara wrote a petition against the development, put the baby in the stroller, and started knocking on doors. She also began attending City Council, Planning Commission, and Redevelopment meetings. Soon she was hooked on government!
Six years later she ran for a city council seat and lost. She ran again in 1979, won, and served on the Council for nine years. Since Vallejo has term limits for city council members, her time in office ended in 1988. She then ran for Supervisor and lost. She ran again and was elected in 1992. She was motivated to run for Supervisor for a second time because she was concerned about government process and land use decisions that threatened Solano County's environment. Most importantly, however, she was concerned about the plight of women and children, especially around the issues of family violence, poverty, and family planning.
What she enjoys most about being a County Supervisor For Barbara, the most important aspect of government process is a process that is open, fair, and inclusive. Barbara enjoys being able to work directly with staff to pinpoint problems and to seek solutions. As a Supervisor, she doesn't have to react to bureaucratic proposals that are submitted in close-to-final form. She also enjoys being able to work with fellow board members to shape programs that are consistent with Board policy and will address the unique needs of Solano County's diverse community. Finally, she enjoys being able to work actively with staff to resolve constituent concerns.
